Use a fire guard where appropriate. Paraffin heaters and portable gas heaters both have a naked flame, which can easily set fire to loose clothing, papers etc. A fireguard can prevent these items from getting too close, in addition to curious pets and children.

Never leave children unattended with a heater. It doesn't matter whether it is an oil filled radiator or a naked flame gas heater, children can injure and burn themselves on any heating element. You should never leave a child in the same room as any operational heater.

Only use a heater on a flat floor. You should never be tempted to raise the heater off the ground or place it at an unnatural angle whilst it is in use. Leave the appliance on terra firma and no one will have the opportunity to bring it crashing down.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Only ever use your room heater in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and safety recommendations.
