What types of Room Heater are there?
Welcome to RoomHeater.co.uk, the one-stop site
for domestic room heater buyers, with our home heating info plus some
great value heaters from UK sellers. In this section we take a quick
look at just some of the different types of heater on the market..
Oil Filled Electric Radiator. These have been
popular for decades because they offer a portable radiator that can
be moved from room to room, often with lower running costs than an
effective fan heater. The heat that can be generated by these radiators
is easily enough to take the edge off a cold room. Most have a thermostat
dial, allowing you to control the temperature. The radiator automatically
clicks on or off to maintain a relatively constant heat. As it has
no fan or exposed heating element it is virtually impossible for young
hands to jam alien objects into the appliance and for this reason
may be regarded as a slightly safer option in houses with children.
Fan Heater. You may get instant heat from one
of these but they can use up a great deal of energy. The draw is continuous
with air being blown out of the appliance across one or more heating
elements. It is a very similar priciple to the hand-held hairdrier.
They are relatively cheap to purchase but can prove costly to run
if used for any prolonged period of time.
Electric Heater without fan. These are an upright
heater with heating element inside and using the power of convection,
where heat rises, to warm the air in the room. It is a relatively
old-fashioned style of heater.
Halogen Heater. These are one of the cheapest
heaters on the market and commonly consist of a reflective panel with
two or three halogen bulbs and a grille. With all three bulbs switched
on, the appliance will draw well over 1kW per hour, although the heat
output is negligible once you get any distance from the halogen heater.
Air Conditioning Unit. Many domestic and commercial
air conditioning units are designed to create not only cool air but
hot air instead, should the need arise. Downsides include their significant
expense, some units can be a little noisy and the simple fact that
many people do not like conditioned air in any form.
Bottled Gas Heater. These are essentially portable
gas fires, running off bottled gas instead of the mains. They can
be an efficient heat source but should always be treated with the
same respect that all gas appliances and naked flames deserve.
Paraffin Heater. These, again, are independent
of any mains power, the paraffin / kerosene fuel being stored in an
integral tank. Although relatively efficient to run and effective
at heating their surroundings, the burning fuel can produce a distinct
odour and refilling can be a messy and dangerous affair if you happen
to inadvertently spill the paraffin.
